How Technology Has The Best Decision For School Districts

â€Å"I don t think tablets are where we should be focused. But I do think they could end up being an efficient way of delivering textbooks. They re just not really that, yet. There s all sorts of poisons and mined minerals and carnage that goes on to make a tablet. Way more than to print a book†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Rushkoff). There is heated debate going on in school districts across the nation, but it is not over dress code or standardized testing. It is over whether schools should shift to tablets instead of dated textbooks. Within the last ten years, the advancement of technology has caused an increase in controversy over which one is the best option. For every 5 students, there was one computer. Instructors stated that 40% of students used com puters, often in their educational methods, in addition to interactive whiteboards and digital cameras†(Educational technology). The country is on the threshold of the most radical change in American education in over a century. It is clear that technology is increasing and is now woven through education as well. Most people know the feeling getting in their comfy clothes and sitting down to watch a new episode of their favorite tv show on the laptop. The popcorn laying by ones’s side. Their butter fingers across the keys, while each image is illuminating your face. Their phone is buzzing from the Snapchats. In this generation, people cling to some type of electronic device. â€Å"According to the US Department of Education and studies by the National Training and Simulation Association Technology-based instruction can reduce the time students take to reach a learning objective by 30-80%†(ProCon.org). In a classroom, teachers are able to take their class around t he world electronically to look at the development of civilizations in Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Latin America. Also, students are able to take virtual trips and collaborate with other students around the world and research in the best libraries

Outline and assess the view that crime and deviance are socially constructed There has been a pleather of research regarding the issue of crime and deviance. A definition of crime and deviance can be explained in relative terms which are dependant on any particular society’s interpretation of crime and deviance. Cultures differ from one society to another and the general consensus of right and wrong can also evolve throughout time. Definitions of crime and deviance can evolve with factors such as time, pace and society. Karl Marx and max Webber both agree that the wealthy were able to dominate definitions of what counts as normality and deviance. The elite can often afford expensive lawyers and are sometimes on a first-name basis with the i ndividuals in charge of making and enforcing laws. Members of the working class generally do not have these advantages. Feminists are also a conflict theory. They argue that in patriarchal societies, males define what is normal, and therefore define deviant female behaviour. Many feminists view that female crime has been virtually ignored by mainstream criminology and mainstream feminists have asserted that if females were socialized in the same way as males had similar roles and experiences, their rates of criminal offending would be roughly the same. There are criticisms of the Interactionists view of crime and deviance. One criticism of the Interactionists perspective is the fact that it fails to explain why individuals commit deviant acts in the first place. Another criticism assumes that once a person has been labelled, the deviance will inevitably become worse. A Final criticism is that Interactions fail to explain why some people should be labelled rather than others and wh y some activities are against the law, and others are not. About Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a serious but uncommon infection caused by either Staphylococcus aureus bacteria or by streptococcus bacteria. Originally linked to the use of tampons, especially high-absorbency ones and those that are not changed frequently, it’s now also known to be associated with the contraceptive sponge and diaphragm birth control methods. TSS also can arise from wounds secondary to minor trauma or surgery incisions where bacteria have been able to enter the body and cause the infection. Most often, streptococcal TSS appears after bacteria have invaded areas of injured skin, such as cuts and scrapes, surgical wounds, and even chickenpox blisters. Symptoms of TSS can include sudden high fever, a faint feeling, diarrhea, headache, a rash, and muscle aches. If your child has these symptoms, call your doctor right away. Symptoms Toxic shock syndrome starts suddenly, often with high fever (temperature at least 102 ° F [38.  ° C]), a rapid drop in blood pressure (with lightheadedness or fainting), vomiting, diarrhea, headache, sore throat, or muscle aches. A sunburn-like rash may appear anywhere on the body, including the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. A person also might have bloodshot eyes and an unusual redness under the eyelids or inside the mouth (and vagina in fem ales). The area around an infected wound can become swollen, red, and tender, or may not even appear infected. Other symptoms may include confusion or other mental changes, decreased urination, fatigue and weakness, and thirst. If TSS is untreated, organs such as the liver and kidneys may begin to fail, and problems such as seizures, bleeding, and heart failure can develop. Prevention The bacteria that cause toxic shock syndrome can be carried on unwashed hands and prompt an infection anywhere on the body. So good hand washing is extremely important. Girls can reduce their risk of TSS by either avoiding tampons or alternating them with sanitary napkins. Girls who use only tampons should choose ones with the lowest absorbency that will handle menstrual flow, and change the tampons frequently. On low-flow days, girls should use pads instead of tampons. Between menstrual periods, store tampons away from heat and moisture (where bacteria can grow) — for example, in a bedroom rather than in a bathroom closet. Because staphylococcus bacteria are often carried on hands, it’s important for girls to wash their hands thoroughly before and after inserting a tampon. If your daughter has her menstrual period, talk to her about taking these precautions. Any female who has recovered from TSS should not use tampons. Clean and bandage all skin wounds as quickly as possible. Call your doctor immediately whenever a wound becomes red, swollen, or tender, or if a fever begins. Diagnosis and Treatment TSS is a medical emergency. If you think your child has TSS, call a doctor right away. Depending on the symptoms, a doctor may see you in the office or refer you to a hospital emergency department for immediate evaluation and testing. If doctors suspect TSS, they will probably start intravenous (IV) fluids and antibiotics as soon as possible. They may take a sample from the suspected site of the infection, such as the skin, nose, or vagina, to check it for TSS. They may also take a blood sample. Other blood tests can help monitor how various organs like the kidneys are working and check for other diseases that may be causing the symptoms. Medical staff will remove tampons, contraceptive devices, or wound packing; clean any wounds; and, if there is a pocket of infection (an abscess), a doctor may need to drain pus from the infected area. People with TSS typically need to stay in the hospital, often in the intensive care unit (ICU), for several days to closely monitor blood pressure, respiratory status, and to look for signs of other problems, such as organ damage. TSS is a very rare illness. Although it can be fatal, if recognized and treated promptly it is usually curable. When to Call the Doctor Call your doctor immediately if your child has any signs or symptoms of toxic shock syndrome. Once you realize that something is wrong, it’s important to get medical attention right away. The sooner your child gets treatment, the better. I walked into the stuffy government room. Rows of plastic chairs were lined up in front of the podium. The fluorescent office lights flickered. A modest American flag hung in the corner, its stripes folded across its stars. As I walked up to the registration table, a receptionist jotted down my name and, giving me a rolled-up paper flag, told me to have a seat. Here in this room, one hand holding a red, white and blue sheet of paper taped to a barbecue skewer, the other placed lightly on my chest, I became a citizen of the United States. A woman in a suit came over to take my green card and information sheet. I never got either back. She then proceeded to call each person in the room (there were about 40 of us) to sign papers. After four hours of what could only be described as ceremonial sitting, a distinguished looking gentleman walked up to the podium, asked us to raise our right hands, and recite each part of the naturalization oath after him. After all, becoming a citizen was a time of congratulations, of celebration, not of obligation. It was about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, right? No one ever highlighted the â€Å"bear arms† part. But the draft section was part of the oath. And how many other little obligations had I agreed to do by signing that paper? How many other parts had I not read closely enough? What had I signed up for in becoming a citizen of the country I had lived in? In Chinese, the United States is called â€Å"mei guo,† or â€Å"beautiful land.† Nowhere in such a description was there any mention of the draft: the only things I heard were the rustles of the amber waves of grain and ringing of freedom. No matter how logical it seemed, how much sense it made in context, I couldnt help but balk for a second. I listened closely for his next line: â€Å"and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.† Awkward. We then recited the Pledge of Allegiance (most of which I had trouble remembering). Then people clapped. Families hugged. After the whole affair, though, I didnt feel different. I didnt suddenly feel patriotic. I didnt want to kiss the ground or wave my new flag. The truth is, I didnt feel any more American leaving that room than when I entered. Dont get me wrong, I dont regret it one bit. Had you given me a choice between becoming a citizen or a Chinese immigrant living in America, Id choose the States every time (God knows what China makes you promise in their naturalization speech.). But for the first time I had to consider that responsibilities came with the rights I had so keenly signed up for: responsibilities that every citizen of a nation should do, from jury duty to voting. I realize now that I did not feel  ­different simply because I was not different. I already had plenty of experience being American. I was American a month after I came here at the age of five. I was already  ­American when I entered kindergarten. I was destined to be American the minute my parents decided that they would raise me here. I didnt assimilate by signing any papers or waving any flags: I did it by living here and breathing here. Suddenly the obligations in the naturalization oath didnt seem so scary: I didnt suddenly sign up for a bunch of new responsibilities. I committed to them the minute I decided to live here. All I did was put it on paper. I understood then what it meant to be a U.S. citizen. We werent here to be proud and patriotic, bathing in the so-called glory of our newly found liberties. We received those liberties when we came to America, not now. We became citizens to assert our allegiance to the world we had already lived in for so many years. And as a citizen, we should be  ­excited to vote, excited to serve on a jury. Im not excited to bear arms, but I certainly understand what it means to protect and preserve the liberties that I had taken for granted for all these years. To become a citizen is not to be patriotic or flaunt the American culture. It is to show respect for and trust in the government we live in. Whether someone was born here or stepped off a plane like me, that  ­respect is the same. Through that definition, I can now safely say that I take the obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion. So help me God.
